Types of Acne
Acne Vulgaris
This is the most common type of acne.
Here are a few forms of vulgaris acne:
●Whitehead- A whitehead starts when the oil (sebaceous) glands are kicked into high gear around puberty. Male hormones called androgens are produced from the adrenal glands in both males and females. Oil (sebum) is a natural substance that protects the skin. Our bodies are constantly sloughing (shedding) layers of skin. During this constant process of shedding, dead skin can block the opening at the base of the hair follicle at the sebaceous glands and cause a buildup of oil, dirt and consequently bacteria. This bacteria will multiply and skin surrounding it will swell. Your body will send white blood cells to the infected area in an attempt to kill the bacteria thus adding to the swelling. This is why we get that nasty little sour on the surface of the skin commonly known as a "whitehead". This is filled with pus, a mixture of white blood cells, bacteria, dirt and oil.
●Blackhead- A blackhead forms the same way as a whitehead only the hair follicle is not entirely blocked. White blood cells, dirt, oil and dead skin cells will mix with oxygen and dry out to look black in color. Blackheads generally won't be inflamed like whiteheads.
●Papule- Papules are lesions that appear as inflammed, swollen red bumps. This kind of lesion is more toward the surface of the skin. Unlike a whitehead, these zits have no pus filled center. Never attempt to pop a papule. This will only cause more inflammation and swelling.
●Pustules- A pustule is basically an inflamed whitehead. This kind of lesion is deeper in the skin than a whitehead or a papule. Like a papule, there will be a swollen red bump only pustules have a white head in the middle. Pustules can leave scarring on the skin. This is the most common form of acne.
Severe Acne Vulgaris
●Nodule- This is a severe version of a papule. This lesion is rooted deep in the skin and is usually accompanied by scarred tissue after healing. It is best to have a Dermitologist treat these types because of the scarring risk. A nodule usaully only responds to prescription strength medicines.
●Cyst- A cyst is an extremely enflammed pustule or whitehead. Like a nodule a cyst is a deep lesion and needs to be addressed by a medical proffesional.
